Don't focus your time on preaching to the reefer mad, the willfully ignorant, or even the middle of the road. They are not likely to change because of your great debate.
Instead, look at the strategy that I and many others have had success with. Go for the 65% of voters in MA that voted for marijuana decrim, the 80%+ nationally that support medical marijuana, the 50%+ that now support legalization. We have the majority but most do not realize this fact. The power to the movement is in bringing out those supporters to be more active.
Take advantage of that power from our numbers.
To often I see comments like this left at the blog link below.
"This sort of thing does little to end the drug war- I believe the people who need to be enlightened will be repulsed by this."
Focusing on non believers is a waste of time. We only need to bring our people out.
Most come to support marijuana reform not because of words or style but based of their own life experiences. They smoked pot and nothing bad happened. Folks that support marijuana reform know what cannabis is and what it's not. Give people credit and ask them to do more. Show them how to get involved. Many want to help but don't know where to start, so they never do. Get them started and we've won.
MassCann/NORML recruited me to do something a decade back and since then I've returned the favor with a small army that is now fighting for marijuana reform. Bringing out one supporter can have these kinds of dividends.
It's worked for me. I've raised 10's of thousands for the cause and been featured on radio, tv, in newspapers, songs and video. Because I reached out to folks who supported the cause but had never actually done anything for it. If I had focused on the middle of the road crowd? That would have never happened.
This is one of the main reasons, I am so big on supporting NORML. They represent marijuana users and encourage local activism. This is what is most important.
Forget tailoring the message for the middle of the road.
Focus on getting our supporters to do something.
Now, I'm not saying that you should ignore the folks against marijuana reform. Taking them on is important. Occasionally folks can be swayed. Debates in the media, always a good thing. But never turn your back on supporters to please the so called middle. Doing that causes more harm than it helps.
Do not spend time worrying about converting the middle of the road. As I previously stated, it's a waste of your valuable time. They've already made up their mind and it has nothing to do with you. It's their life experience that determines that, nothing you say or do is likely to change that. If you want to focus on one in a million, play the lottery. I'd rather fish in a lake full of trout. Ever notice why I always have a full schedule? Because I focus on supporters and not the middle of the road.
