Rio, Brazil Police Raid Slums After Days of Violence

Rio, Brazil Police Raid Slums After Days of Violence

Armed with military weapons and machinery, Rio de Janeiro police raided one of the city's biggest drug strongholds, leading to days of violence.

It might not be considered a war zone, but the military-grade weapons and armored personnel carriers being used by Rio de Janeiro’s police, might say otherwise.

The police in Brazil’s second largest city began a massive mop-up operation across the city slums – or favelas – imprisoned gang leaders ordered an attack on police stations across Rio.

The violence began Sunday in response to Brazil’s attempt to push drug gangs out of its favelas across the country. CNN says the timing for violence is horrible for the country’s reputation.

“And Brazil’s outgoing President Lula da Silva said the state would do whatever it takes so that the good guys, as he puts it, defeat those who prefer a life of crime. But these are not the scenes the city of Rio de Janeiro wants the world to see in the run up to the World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games two years later.”
