MPP returns to party at Playboy Mansion, some call for boycott of event

MPP Party at the Mansion

"I'm pleased to announce that the Marijuana Policy Project will be hosting a major fundraising party at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles on July 7, from 8:00 pm to midnight. And you're invited.

The ticket price will increase approximately once a month as the event nears, so get yours today, before the next price increase on April 1. Please visit www.mpp.org/pb2011 for more details.

Part of the price of each ticket is tax-deductible, and 100% of the proceeds will go toward our efforts to end marijuana prohibition in the U.S.

In other words, this is a win/win/win situation: You attend a great party, you receive a tax deduction, and you help change our nation's absurd marijuana laws.

In addition to the Mansion's famous attractions -- the monkeys, the arcade room, and the grotto -- there will also be a major music act, comedians, fire-dancing, and a few surprises.

These tickets almost sell themselves, so please consider forwarding this message to your friends, family, and colleagues who you think might be interested in joining us for this event.

And perhaps you'll want to purchase a few tickets today, before the price goes up at the end of this month.

I hope to see you on July 7.

Sincerely,

Rob Kampia
Executive Director
Marijuana Policy Project
Washington, D.C."

Steve Bloom of Celebstoner.com posts on facebook;
"Boycott this event!"

"This is the kind of event that led to the forming of the NORML Women's Alliance. After everything that has happened with Rob Kampia and the MPP, it's extremely insensitive and actually appalling that they would return to the Playboy Mansion for another fundraiser..."

"That's not the point. Using scantily-clad fake-boob blonde babes to sell tickets for a marijuana event is tacky and classless and demeans the movement..."

"Rob Kampia and Playboy Mansion shouldn't even be used in the same sentence at this point. Kampia's up to old tricks. I pity the fools who buy into this scheme.."
Many have supported Bloom's remarks with a few in the movement countering in support of the MPP Playboy event.

What do you think?

Vote on our poll to the right on this page.

In light of Kampia's past scandal it does seem to be a bad move but maybe the fund-raising is more important than bad PR?

  1. IMO the problem is Kampia, not the Playboy mansion.

Playboy has supported cannabis reform for a long time, I salute them for that.

The USA's puritan repression of human sexuality is just as bad as cannabis prohibition.

  2. Can someone please fill in the details about MMP & Rob Kampia's fall from grace? What exactly happened? I've heard rumors but would like substantiation. As for the Playboy Mansion, I know Heff's been pro pot forever, and there's money behind his organization, but even if I had the kind of money it would take to attend some fundraiser at his mansion, that kind of place is not my cup of tea, not because I'm a Puritan, or in any way sexually repressed, but because Playboy is such a tacky sexist relic, a leftover 60's flashback from Heffner's dated vision of women as cotton-tailed play toys and pot smoking as the naughty hedonistic recreation of hipsters with mansions.
