Steven Epstein, Candidate for MassCann/NORML Treasurer & Clerk

Lifetime member of the NORML Legal Committee.

My thanks go to the Board of Directors for again slating me to be Clerk & Treasurer & to the members for voting me to be Treasurer, Clerk, or both since the incorporation of Mass Cann in 1990.

I look forward to serving Mass Cann until we reach our goal of legalizing it.

For those who do not know me:

My life as a marijuana law reformer began in 1974, with handing out NORML pamphlets at concerts while attending Cornell University.  While at BU’s School of Law, six other students and I formed the New Lawyers Caucus and brought Kevin Zeese, then NORML’s Executive Director, to campus.  In early 1989, I received a call from a man in North Adams planning a protest who needed legal help; I referred him to Dick Evans.  Held Memorial Day Weekend, the event is considered the first “Freedom Rally.”  It was there I met Jack Herer and took the California Reefer Raiders Pledge “to work all I can to legalize pot till dead or age 84.”

The following winter Maddy Webster and I met and began organizing a NORML chapter.  In late spring, we met High Times Freedom Fighters Ron and Linda Noel.  The four of us, with a cast of others produced the Second Freedom Rally at the U.S.S. Constitution on August 25, 1990 and incorporated the Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition of NORML and Freedom Fighters that fall.

I’ve helped produce and been at every Freedom Rally.

As Treasurer my duties include keeping track of Mass Cann’s limited resources, confidential membership list and preparing financial reports.

As Clerk, my duties include maintaining Mass Cann’s records, keeping minutes of meetings, sending notices of meetings, overseeing the Annual election, editing of Mass Cann’s newsletter “Mass Grass”, and sending press releases.  Over the years, I estimate I’ve stuffed, sealed and stamped over 20 thousand pieces of Mass Cann mail.

I update and post to the Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition’s facebook group & MassCann/NORML facebook page, send information to our e-mail lists masscann-activist & masscann-announce about what is happening with legislation on Beacon Hill and Capital Hill, in Massachusetts’ media and in the cities and towns of the state.

Since 2000, I’ve worked on planning Public Policy Questions and collected thousands of signatures to put them on the ballot.

I’ve testified at most hearings on Beacon Hill concerning marijuana law reform.  Mike Crawford’s video of others and I testifying at recent hearings can be found at
