Republican Presidential Debate, 10/18/2011

The CNN Republican Presidential Debate is hosted fairly by Anderson Cooper and this one might have been equally, the most entertaining and most enlightening debate in a long string of them.

The major candidates and my review of their debate tonight.

Rick Perry: Did not look Presidential, once again, looking more like a B-list talent just out of rehab.

Mitt Romney: Battling and taking serious hits from Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Perry, it was perhaps his roughest time through in any of these televised debates.

Herman Cain: Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan, might as well been 6-6-6. The new front runner was bombarded by every candidate on the stage, all of them going after what Ron Paul called the "regressive and dangerous" tax plan. Apples and oranges, bananas. The only positive soundbite for Cain was when he went after Occupy Wall Street, "Wall Street didn't put in failed economic policies, Wall Street didn't spend a trillion dollars. They should be in front of the White House.." But that was sure short lived, Herman less than 15 seconds, with Ron Paul setting the record correct.

Ron Paul: Congressman Paul in Vegas finds a very supportive audience and is stronger for it. Who predicted this? That Dr. Paul would be leading the night with Latinos and bringing it home with local (Yuca Mountain) Nevada states rights issues? With Rick Santorum seeming to be helping, pointing out all the candidates on the stage who supported the TARP bailouts? With Ron Paul finally burying Herman Cain after his one moment of populist speak? Who predicted this? Nobody.

All on stage tonight were following Ron Paul. Will voters? Beyond the strong 10% base? Remains to be seen but it seems very likely we will see more poll movement after tonight's debate. Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, Florida, I'm starting to believe he could make a run. It's not impossible, not with this cast of candidates.
